Originally created to help young people of limeted means to experience the country side and cities of the world, Hostelling International has a long history of almoust 100 years. Since 1909 when hostelling was born out of the excursions of German school teacher Richard Schirrmann, it has become one of the world's biggest international membership organisations for youth with over 3 milion members, 35 million overnight stays a year and more than 4000 hostels in over 80 countries.
